Set edge case

Can a Yono Rummy set use two cards of the same suit?

Match the rank, but keep each natural card’s suit different.

Direct answer

No. A standard Indian Rummy set uses three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. If two natural cards repeat both rank and suit—for example 7♣-7♦-7♣—the group is not a valid set, even when two decks make that duplicate possible. Replace one duplicate with another suit or regroup the card elsewhere.

Valid and invalid Seven sets

Read rank and suit separately. “All Sevens” passes only the first test; the suit test still has to pass.

Valid 3-card set
7♣7♦7♥
Invalid duplicate
7♣7♦7♣
Valid 4-card set
7♣7♦7♥7♠

Why duplicate cards appear in 13-card Rummy

Indian Rummy commonly uses more than one deck, so your hand can contain two copies of the exact same rank and suit. That is normal dealing, but it does not change the set definition. A duplicate 7♣ cannot stand in for the missing 7♥ or 7♠ inside the same set.

The spare duplicate may still be useful in a sequence such as 6♣-7♣-8♣, provided that physical 7♣ is not also counted in the set. Every card in a declared hand belongs to one group only.

Three-step set check

  1. Rank: all natural cards show the same rank, such as every card being a Seven.
  2. Suit: each natural Seven has a different suit. Say the suits aloud if two black cards look similar.
  3. Count: the group has at least three cards. A fourth natural suit can extend it.

A Joker can substitute within a set under common rules, but it does not make two identical natural cards a clean different-suit set. Read the room’s Joker rule and test the natural cards first. Use the Play & Learn room to sort sample sets before declaring.

Duplicate set FAQ

Why did the app reject 7♣-7♦-7♣?

Two natural cards repeat the Club suit. A valid natural set needs different suits for the equal ranks.

Can the spare 7♣ be used in a Club sequence?

Yes if it forms a valid same-suit run and that physical card is assigned only to that sequence.
